Troubadours / Open Doors

February 22, 2006 @ 16:45:57
troubadours / open doors

Come 26 February, KLPac & Troubadours Enterprise will be launching Troubadours / Open Doors, an all-new monthly series of live performances.

For those who are unfamiliar with Troubadours, it is a regular music event held around the Klang Valley since April 2005. Helming this enterprise are singer songwriters Azmyl Yunor, Tan Sei Hon and Jerome Kugan who organized Troubadours as a showcase for local talents performing original music. Troubadours night are intimate and friendly, and attended by a diverse group of musicians and music-lovers.

With this new collaboration, the core objective remains the same – to feature talented Malaysians who write and perform original material, solo or in a band. However, this series is partly driven towards introducing new musicians to the local scene. It serves as a much-needed platform for such musicians to showcase their work.

To kickstart Troubadours / Open Doors, an exciting line-up of old and new names on the local circuit promises a refreshing fusion of original music. Featured musicians include Azmyl Yunor, Broken Scar, Ian Chow and Da Praise Project. Exclusive to the launch will also be an independent short film screening prior to the performances, featuring the works of James Lee, Tan Chui Mui and Azharr Rudin.

Troubadours / Open Doors
series will take place on the third Sunday of each month at KLPac.

Those interested to showcase their music, please email your biodata and song lyrics to troubadourskl@gmail.com and ian@klpac.com.

Date: 26 February 2006 (Sun)
Time: 3.00 p.m.
Venue: Pentas 2
Price: RM10
Presenter: KLPac & Troubadours Enterprise

No goats here! Just a full moon shining!

January 28, 2006 @ 08:57:23
Moonshine Feb 2 2006
Click here for a larger pic

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Moonshine gig is postponed until further notice

God seems to have more than bless Malaysia for its abundance of singer-songwriter and rugged outgoing indie types (and also to the people who run and organise gigs!)

WHERE: No Black Tie, 17 Lorong Mesui, Off Jalan Nagasari, 50200 Kuala Lumpur
WHEN: 2 February 2006 (Thursday)
CHARGE: RM20 (cover)
TEL: 03-21423737 (NBT)
EMAIL: moonshinekl [at] gmail [dot] com
WEBSITE: http://moonshinekl.blogspot.com

It's the February installation of Moonshine! (moonshinekl.blogspot.com) with an unplugged (and plugged?) folk/pop-rock flavour this month. Lots of cool and well-known mouth-watering (stop leering, you there!) names in the local circuit! See if you recognise some:

1. Azmyl Yunor, backed by the Sigarettes
A great achiever, excelling as an academia and artisan, he released his EP “Tenets” to rave reviews in 2005. He's one of the tireless organiser of “Troubadours” and is described as one who will “...put a smile on your face... with the energy of a punk rock band, the raw and edge of a seasoned busker, and the happy-go-lucky attitude of the smoking guitarman next door...”

2. False Opus
The quintet was formed in mid-2000 and are Ewan, Kudux, Sadat, Syaril, and Waa. They've been featured on “...Rock The World 4, Latte@8, the KL Menjerit Launch and the Butterfingers Malayneum tour”. They're released their debut EP recently featuring the single “Insomnia Girl”. Lots of airplay on WOWfm!

3. Stonebay

I guess you might have seen them on “Homegrown”. They are frontman Ojie who's backed by a band members Dicky (guitar), Roy (bass) and Hazreq (drums). I like their edgy sound - check out the soundclip on their page (WARNING: Jazz purist types, please don't read this) Bring on those distorted guitars! More on their site!

4. The Sofa Sessions
I was fortunate enough (before the Sumatran haze overwhelmed me) to watch them 'live' at the Sunrise Rhythm and Jazz Fest last year. The Sofa Sessions are Ariff Akhir (lead vocals and guitar), Shahril Eashak (electric bass) and Shahriz A E (drums, percussions and additional vocals). Reza likens their sound to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Rolling Stones and the Dave Matthews Band.

They've also been on the Music Canteen roadshows and the KLue/Starbucks series.

5. Rizal Hefni
This seasoned musician hailing from Singapore has been doing some open-mics in the city. For those who haven't heard him yet, this will be a good time to catch Rizal and his band. I haven't seen him yet, and the proximity to the holidays mean I will have to do it at the next opportunity. But for those who can, go!

Backyard Pub JAMFEST 2005 Finale!

November 15, 2005 @ 10:01:40
Yes, it's happening this Thursday, 17 Nov 2005 at the Backyard Pub, Sri Hartamas

Who's performing? Friends of ours, Cosmic Funk Express!

They'll be playing a fusion of funk, rock and jazz and comprises of Zack Kim (lead guitar), Alda Tan (bass) and Alex Ang (drums). (Please disregard the mugshot on pg 15 of U Buy U Sell, NST that has Elliott Koon's picture up instead of Alex's...)

So where has the band travelled to thus far? Many places! Here's an inexhaustive list:

1. Music Canteen Truck Tour for the Kuantan leg
2. Sunrise Rhythm and Jazz Fest 2005!
3. Art of All Carnival
4. World Peace Concert
5. Kampong Fest
6. Fete De La Musique 2005
7. HELP Institutes' Battle of the Bands.

Ok, the Jamfest 2005 finale starts at 8.00 p.m. sharp. Now who else shall be performing?

1. Tempered Mental
2. Gerard Anthony
3. Kenny Hogan & Faiser Florez
4. Viji, Fasy & Friends

Last I checked, there are NO jazz gigs on Thursday at the usual jazz clubs/bars/restaurants (alright, the gig list will be up this afternoon) so this is a pleasant detour!

Oct 2005 (Week 5) - Rock Gigs In Kuala Lumpur

October 27, 2005 @ 18:23:20
I guess it has to come. A mini-rock gig listing; our first to be exact.

1. Tonight at the Backyard Pub, catch FREQUENCY CANNON who won first place at Astro Hitz.TV Blast Off band competition in February. Frequency Cannon are Kua Chee on lead vocals, Azrul on bass, Yu-Ri, on lead guitar, Siva on rhythm guitar and Dino on drums.

Two of their songs off their EP, Girl and Fame & Glory, are featured in the movie Gol & Gincu.

Sharing the night with them would be KRUDE, a seven-strong band with their brew of “...upbeat, 60's to 80's covers of iconic bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and a 'spattering of new covers'”.

And there's LA VIVA, a four-piece band led by Alphonse Jerome and Mathew Charles, described as a unique Latin rock and percussion band with a wide following in the local music circuit.

They cover a wide swath of genres from rock, blues and reggae to Latin American, Caribbean and salsa

Mel and Eugene met the drummer Tony Jones at a private function recently and the former Lewis Pragasam student bears glimpses of his master's brilliance!

The music starts at 9pm, with no reservations, no cover charge, no tickets, and of course no free loaders.

[ Next Please ]

2. LiveHouseProject invites you to an evening of rock with BE JAYA this Friday, 28 Oct 2005, 9.30 till 11.30 p.m. at Little Havana, KL

'Be Jaya' is an instrumental three-piece rock band comprising Jaya, Mozad and Amil. The stuff they played led them to the runner-up position at the Asian Beat 2001 competition.

Mozad, the bassist was a member of the original “High Wired” who won the same competition.

Little Havana is located at 2 & 4, Lorong Sahabat, Off Changkat Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
